At he age of six, he became a monk and he studied Dharma, rituals, prayers and other subjects. As a small boy, he had to leave Tibet and move to India. In Dharamsala he studied the making of mandalas and thankas. He then studied philosophy for seven years at the monastery of Drikung, after which he went into retreat for four years in Almora (India) and completed traditional "Six Jogas of Naropa" and "Fivefold Mahamudra". Vajrakilaya (Dorje Phurba in Tibetan)

Vajrakilaya is the forceful form of Vajrasattva. The practice of Vajrakilaya is very efficient for removing the inner and outer obstacles, which do not let love, kindness, and enlightenment to arise. As this practice embodies the enlightened activity of all the buddhas, it can subdue inner and outer demonic forces.
Vajrakilaya drubchen is traditionally done at the end of the year, to remove the possible obstacles of the forthcoming year. Garchen Rinpoche conducts this Vajrakilaya drubchen at the end of every year for the same purpose.
Puhurba, which is the ritual dagger, is also frequently used for healing, and Lama Kunsang gives advice on that too.
When Padmasambhava practiced Yangdak Heruka to achieve complete enlightenment, he had to face many obstacles, especially the outer ones. In order to overcome them, he did Vajrakilaya retreat, through which all the obstacles were removed and he attained complete realization. That reatreat he did in Pharping near Kathmandu, where to date is a gap in a mountain in the place where he sat. Later Padmasambhava told that Yangdak Heruka is a great way for achieving enlightenment, but it's like a precious caravan that has to be protected in order to arrive to destination safely. And, for the protection, Vajrakilaya is the best.
